Orthotic Types

Custom Foot Orthotics
Custom foot orthotics have come a long way since the days of plaster moulds and fiberglass (even metal!) hard arch supports. As no two custom orthotics are exactly the same, we now have quite intelligent systems that help to improve diagnosis and engineer higher quality and more effective designs and materials than ever before.

Footwear Modifications & Simple Additions
Sometimes foot problems can be resolved with a simple change such as shaped padding in footwear or altered footwear to improve orthotic effectiveness. As much as we focus on the patient and assess their feet and health, assessing footwear for any changes is an important part of treatment as well.

Above The Ankle Orthotics
For clients requiring higher levels of alignment and function support than solely at the foot level, we assess the need for greater orthotic support such as ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). Get in touch with our friendly team today to find out more about AFO treatment options. Digital assessment through high-speed video analysis, pressure analysis and thorough clinical testing allows us to identify the factors affecting you.

3D Scanning
To get an accurate replica of your foot and lower limb, the use of high-quality 3D scanners is a great method to get the right orthotic result for you. A good orthosis can only come from good scanning, so it is important to have the right equipment at hand. We use your 3D scans when digitally designing your orthotics to make sure you get the accuracy needed.

Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs)

People are often familiar with orthotics and the adoption of the word into many areas, such as footwear or over-the-counter options; however, fewer people are familiar with ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). Traditional orthotics may not be sufficient for some people whose need for foot support and better function is greater than what standard care can provide.

An AFO is a medical device that can be customised to help support the action of the foot and lower leg to allow standing and walking with far greater ease. They are most often constructed from plastic materials and are shaped around the leg, ankle and foot to work inside of suitable shoes.

While past ankle and foot supports have been cumbersome and difficult to use, modern technology helps us create balanced, practical solutions. Our podiatrists offer comfortable and current options that make life easier for our patients.

Feel free to contact us to book a podiatrist visit in either of our Darwin or Palmerston locations to discuss how we may be able to help you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a referral?

A referral is not necessary to see our podiatrists. Some patients may be referred through their GP, health practitioner or case worker. We see patients with referrals such as DVA patients, as well as private patients. Private patients can use their private health fund to receive their benefit and only pay the gap at the clinic.

  • How do you create custom orthotics?

Following a thorough digital and clinical analysis, we take a detailed medical history, including physical activity levels and types, footwear needs and diagnosis. We use 3D scanning to build an accurate digital capture of your foot. Orthotics are then designed and produced through 3D printing, foam milling, and additional construction based on the strength, flex, cushioning and design that is right for you.

  • What type of orthotics would be best for me?

There are number of factors to consider when determining the ideal orthotics to suit your needs. We’ll take into account what support you require, the type of shoes you wear, activity levels and how long you’ll be required to wear orthotics for. Your orthotics will vary depending on your condition.

  • What can orthotics help treat?

Different orthoses are used for different problems: resolving and assisting with treating painful conditions, supporting and improving lower limb posture, improving movement/joint function and gait problems, as well as preventing long-term issues arising. They assist with common pain complaints such as rheumatoid arthritis, plantar fasciitis, sesamoiditis and many other foot ankle, knee and back pain complaints.

  • What types of shoes can my orthotics be fitted to?

Orthotics can be designed to fit to many enclosed shoes and some sandal types when the shoes are a good fit. Bringing shoes along for your visit will help identify options for orthotic support.
